In the Middle of Summer

Since my last blog...

I found out I did fine in my spring quarter classes;
I've completed two classes in four weeks with another one starting next week;
been back up to the Bay Area with Allison to visit friends and family;
and completed four weeks of training for an upcoming triathlon in September.

Allison and I decided it'd be fun to compete in the Long Beach Triathlon happening at the end of September. The triathlon involves swimming a 1/2 mile in open water (we've been told the water is quite clean), biking 11 miles, and running 3 miles. This length is considered to be a sprint (short) distance triathlon and great for the beginner to the professional level triathlete.

We work out five days out of a week alternating between swimming, running & biking, and biking. We got our work out regiment from the book Triathlon Training Basics by Gale Bernhardt and we've been following the chapter entitled the "Unfit Beginner". That's us! And so far so good. We've both become better swimmers, bikers, and runners since we first started. Exercising has become such a part of our routine that I'll go and work out even if it's getting late at night and I'm kind of tired. I don't feel like I've done everything I've needed to do for the day until I finish working out.

We haven't done as much sailing as we did in the past because we've been out of town and I've been having to study for my summer classes. The next sport I really want to learn is tennis. I used to play back in Hong Kong but I wasn't very good at it because I hadn't played since I was in elementary school. Sometimes Allison and I will play, but I get kind of frustrated with how little I know about playing the sport properly. Allison has taught me quite a lot but we both figure it'd be good for me to take some classes.

This weekend, we're off to San Diego to visit my bro for his birthday. We're also thinking about doing some swimming down at La Jolla Cove and some running & biking. San Diego's such a great place. Why again don't Allison and I live there?

  • Dude,

    Great mid-summer update! Glad you and Allison are well, you triathletes you! Running, biking, swimming and you feel you've done nothing with your day until those are done. WOW! I've started to like exercise more and more, too (primarily swimming with Ling in the mornings) but not to this level. Are you the next Armstrong or Landis?

    Miss you,
    Mark
